Summary

Infinity provided engineering and project support to the transition of a floating production facility into a managed decommissioning programme, working within a governance framework carrying a high degree of external scrutiny.

Overview

The facility had passed out of normal operator control and into a managed transition arrangement, which brought an unusual combination of pressures: the asset still had to be kept safe and compliant, the eventual decommissioning scope had to be defined from an incomplete information base, and every decision was subject to a level of oversight well beyond a conventional commercial project. Infinity supported the engineering and project management side of that transition, helping to establish what the asset actually required and in what order.

Objective

  • Support the safe and compliant transition of the facility into a managed programme
  • Establish the engineering basis for the decommissioning scope
  • Prioritise interventions against risk, cost and regulatory obligation
  • Maintain delivery discipline under an elevated governance and scrutiny regime

Key findings

  • Asset and well-stock information gaps, not technical difficulty, were the dominant constraint on scope definition
  • Prioritisation had to balance regulatory obligation against genuine risk reduction, which do not always align
  • Early engineering definition materially reduced the cost of the eventual decommissioning scope
  • Governance intensity required a documentation and traceability standard above normal project practice
  • Late-life assets need a different planning mindset from producing assets, not a scaled-down version of one

Differentiator

Infinity regularly works on assets in their final years, where the engineering question is rarely how to build something new and almost always how to make safe, defensible decisions with imperfect information. That experience transferred directly into a high-scrutiny transition setting.

Outcome

The programme gained a clearer engineering basis for its decommissioning scope and a defensible prioritisation of work. The engagement demonstrates Infinity’s ability to operate credibly inside governance regimes far more demanding than a standard commercial contract.
