Summary

Infinity provided production assurance and operability support to a major offshore gas development across four separate phases over five years, working for the EPC contractor delivering the floating production unit.

Overview

The development is one of the largest gas projects in its region and the floating production unit at its centre had to be designed for decades of continuous operation. Infinity were brought in to support production assurance and operability across the design, including hazard and operability review support, and were retained across four distinct engagements as the project moved from design into execution and towards operational readiness. The relationship spanned five years and multiple project phases rather than a single study.

Objective

  • Support production assurance and operability across the facility design
  • Provide specialist input to hazard and operability review
  • Ensure operating and fluid behaviour assumptions held as the design matured
  • Maintain continuity of technical knowledge across successive project phases

Key findings

  • Continuity across phases preserved design intent that would otherwise have been lost at each handover
  • Operability issues identified during design review were substantially cheaper to resolve than after fabrication
  • Hazard and operability review benefited from engineers who had carried the design assumptions from the previous phase
  • Long-life facilities require operating envelope assumptions to be re-tested as the design matures, not fixed early
  • Being retained across four engagements gave the contractor a consistent technical position to work from

Differentiator

Infinity was re-engaged four times over five years by the same contractor on the same development. That continuity is the differentiator: the team carrying out the later phases was the same team of engineers who had set the assumptions in the earlier ones.

Outcome

The contractor received consistent production assurance support from design through to operational readiness on a flagship gas development, delivered by a UK-based team working to Australian project requirements.
