Summary

Infinity delivered the subsea, umbilicals, risers and flowlines scope and the production assurance basis for an offshore Brazilian heavy oil development, and separately provided independent verification of the development’s engineering.

Overview

The development is a heavy oil field tied back to a floating production facility, and heavy oil brings a combination of challenges that touch nearly every discipline and start in the subsurface: fluid characterisation, reservoir profiles, thermal design, materials selection, operability and intervention all interact. Infinity held responsibility for the SURF scope and the production assurance basis through pre-FEED and FEED. In a separate engagement, Infinity acted as independent verifier of the development’s engineering, working through the operator’s design deliverables and issuing a formal verification position.

Objective

  • Deliver the subsea, umbilical, riser and flowline scope through pre-FEED and FEED
  • Establish the production assurance and operability basis for a heavy oil development
  • Provide independent verification of the development engineering
  • Support the operator through a structured comment and response process to close out findings

Key findings

  • Heavy oil development decisions could not be separated by discipline; the subsurface fluid characterisation drove thermal, materials and operability choices directly
  • The SURF configuration was driven by fluid behaviour and intervention strategy rather than layout efficiency
  • Independent verification identified assumptions carried forward without re-testing against the maturing design
  • A structured comment and response register resolved findings faster than sequential document review
  • Delivering both the design scope and, separately, the verification scope required strict separation of teams and records

Differentiator

Infinity was trusted by the same client both to deliver a development scope and, on a separate engagement, to independently verify development engineering. Sustaining both roles required demonstrable rigour in how the work was governed, documented and staffed.

Outcome

The development progressed through pre-FEED and FEED with an integrated subsea and production assurance basis, and the operator received a formally issued independent verification position.
