Summary

Infinity provided engineering support to a floating offshore wind development off the coast of South Korea, working for a Norwegian engineering contractor delivering into the Korean market.

Overview

Floating offshore wind is being deployed into water depths where fixed foundations are not viable, and the engineering draws heavily on offshore oil and gas practice: station keeping, marine operations, structural response, technical safety and the management of dynamic systems in open water. Infinity supported the development phase of a Korean floating wind project, applying offshore engineering and technical safety experience developed on North Sea and Norwegian assets to a renewables application in a new regulatory environment.

Objective

  • Provide offshore engineering and technical safety support to the development
  • Apply established offshore practice to a floating renewables application
  • Support the contractor's delivery into an unfamiliar regulatory regime
  • Contribute to development definition ahead of the next project phase

Key findings

  • Floating wind draws more directly on offshore oil and gas engineering practice than on fixed-bottom wind experience
  • Technical safety approaches developed for offshore hydrocarbons transferred effectively with adaptation
  • Station keeping and marine operations were the dominant engineering constraints
  • Working into an unfamiliar regulatory regime required early alignment on standards rather than late compliance checking
  • Cross-sector transfer of offshore capability shortened the development learning curve for the contractor

Differentiator

Infinity’s offshore engineering capability is not confined to hydrocarbons. The same disciplines that deliver subsea developments and floating production facilities apply directly to floating wind, and Infinity have supported floating wind, fixed offshore wind and carbon capture and storage developments alongside their oil and gas work.

Outcome

The contractor received offshore engineering and technical safety support for a floating wind development in a growing Asian market. The engagement demonstrates Infinity’s capability across the energy transition as well as conventional offshore developments.
