Summary

Infinity was responsible for the full subsea field development scope on a deepwater West African concept study, covering a floating production unit with offloading to tanker and a gas export line tied back to an existing host FPSO.

Overview

The development sat in deep water, remote from existing infrastructure, and the operator needed a credible technical basis before committing to the next phase. The concept combined a new floating production unit, offtake by tanker, and a gas export route to an established host facility already operating in the region. Infinity took responsibility for the subsea scope across the whole development, working from the operator’s reservoir profiles and alongside the topsides and marine workstreams so that the concept held together as a single system rather than a set of separately optimised parts.

Objective

  • Define a technically viable subsea architecture for the field development
  • Establish the gas export route and tie-in arrangement to the existing host facility
  • Size and configure the production system to match the offloading concept
  • Provide the operator with the engineering basis required to progress the development

Key findings

  • The gas export tie-back to an existing host materially changed the economics compared with standalone options
  • Subsea architecture had to be driven by the offloading concept rather than developed independently of it
  • Interface definition with the third-party host facility was an early rather than late activity
  • Water depth and step-out distance drove equipment selection more strongly than throughput
  • Whole-system thinking across subsea, topsides and marine avoided optimisation in one area creating cost in another

Differentiator

Infinity brought UKCS and Norwegian development discipline to a West African deepwater setting, applying the same governance and technical challenge used on North Sea projects while accounting for the very different logistics, host arrangements and operating environment.

Outcome

The operator was given a coherent, deliverable subsea development concept with the gas export route defined and interfaces to the host facility understood. The work forms part of a wider body of Infinity deepwater experience offshore West Africa spanning Nigeria, Angola, Gabon, Equatorial Guinea and Mauritania.
